The Culture of Image Foundation seeks to build of a social archive telling the life stories of Silesian families and the cultural characteristics of the region. To this end, we collect and digitize family photographs, we note down memories and record personal accounts.
We perceive the meeting with family photographs as a form of a dialogue, both with the people describing photos, and with the absent, recalled in the stories.
Wedding photographs, christening and holy communion mementos, holiday photos and images of beloved pets make us realize the existence and changes in particular conventions of perception. They tell us about epochs and fashions. Attached to the fridge, carried in wallets, featured as mobile wallpapers or exposed in frames on the wall, family photos express the memory of relatives, confirm the continuity of kinship, testify of connection with a given place. That’s what makes them so interesting.
